What Is Association of the Christian Schools International (ACSI) Zimbabwe?

A Parent's Guide to the Association of Christian Schools International in Zimbabwe
If your child attends a Christian school, or you're considering one, you may have seen the letters "ACSI" on a school's website or prospectus. Here's what it means and whether it should matter to you as a parent.
What Is ACSI?
The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) is a global Christian education organisation that has been around since 1978. Worldwide, it works with over 25,000 schools across more than 100 countries. Think of it as the international body for Christian schooling.
ACSI Zimbabwe is the local chapter. It brings together Christian schools in Zimbabwe, both government-registered and private, under one association. Its goal is to strengthen Christian schools and support teachers through training, conferences, and shared standards.
Unlike the ATS, which is made up exclusively of established, high-fee private schools, ACSI Zimbabwe's membership is more varied. It includes well-known schools like Gateway Primary and Eaglesvale, but also smaller community schools like Hearts Christian College in Norton and Karanda Mission Primary in Mt Darwin. Some are ECD-only centres. The range is wide.
How Is It Different from the ATS?
This is the question most parents will have. ACSI is different in a few ways.
First, the connecting thread is faith. ACSI schools share a statement of faith, a code of ethics, and core Christian beliefs. Schools don't need to be non-profit to join.
Second, ACSI focuses heavily on teacher development and school improvement rather than just governance standards. It runs an annual educators' conference (hosted at Gateway Primary School since 2009, drawing close to 500 educators), teacher certification programmes, and a school improvement process called PSI (Paths to School Improvement).
Third, ACSI membership is relatively affordable. Schools pay around US$0.50 per student per term. Individual teachers can join for US$10 per term. This is different from the ATS where membership is limited to schools that meet strict governance and financial independence criteria.
That said, there are several schools that are both ACSI and ATS members. Schools like Lendy Park, Midlands Christian College, Tynwald Primary School and Gateway Primary School.
Why Should Parents Care?
If a school is an ACSI member, it tells you a few things. The school has committed to a shared Christian ethos and code of conduct. Its teachers have access to professional development through ACSI's training programmes. And the school is connected to a wider network, both locally and internationally.
For parents who want their children educated in a distinctly Christian environment, where faith is woven into the school day and acts as a guiding principle ACSI membership is a positive sign.
That said, ACSI membership on its own is not the same as accreditation. ACSI does offer an international accreditation programme and a school improvement certification process, but not every member school has gone through these. Membership means the school subscribes to ACSI's beliefs and code of ethics. Accreditation or PSI certification means the school has been externally evaluated against specific quality standards. There's a difference, and it's worth asking the school which level they are.
Things to Keep in Mind
ACSI schools in Zimbabwe range from affordable community schools to well-established institutions charging significant fees. Don't assume that because two schools both carry the ACSI badge, they offer the same experience or charge similar fees.
Also, because ACSI is faith-based, the Christian commitment is real and central. If you're not comfortable with your child being taught from a biblical worldview across subjects, not just in RE class, then an ACSI school may not be the right fit. This isn't a criticism. It's the whole point of the association.
The Bottom Line
ACSI Zimbabwe is a growing network for Christian schools in the country. It's less exclusive than the ATS and more focused on faith-based education and teacher development. For Christian parents looking for a school where faith and learning are integrated, checking whether a school is an ACSI member is a useful starting point. Just remember to look beyond the badge and ask about the school's specific things that yoou care abut , results, and what your fees actually cover.
